What will it cost me if the HSE Inspector visits?

If the HSE (Health & Safety Executive) visits your business and finds that you are in material breach of Health and Safety law, you will have to pay for their time to identify what is wrong. This is known as a fee for intervention (FFI). Any business not found to be in material breach won't have to pay any costs for the visit.

A material breach is classed as anything that the HSE Inspector considers serious enough that they need to write to the business documenting the action needed to be taken to deal with and rectify the breach.

The current cost in 2021 is £160.00+VAT per hour and this fee will include the time spent at the original visit made by the inspector. The fee may include the HSE inspectors time involving time at your business, preparing reports, getting specialist advice, talking to your workers and talking to yourself after the visit

It's always best practice to be legally compliant with your health and safety starting with keeping your policy revised and up to date, your risk assessments current, and getting access to the right advice when needed amongst others. Remember, you need to make sure you assess all reasonably foreseeable risks in your business and put in the relevant control measures.  This isn't something you should put off!
