How IOSH Managing Safely Helped Hull based Managers Spot a Serious Risk Assessment Problem on Day One

We recently delivered an IOSH Managing Safely course in Hull for a local company, with several of their managers and directors attending the training.
Like many businesses, they already had health and safety arrangements in place, including risk assessments that had been completed by an external consultant.
On the first day of the course, we were looking at risk assessments, what they are, why they matter, and how to write them out properly.
During the session, one of the managers made a comment about their existing risk assessments. As we talked it through, it quickly became clear that the documents they had been given were very poor......
❌ They were not practical.
❌ They were not specific enough.
❌ And most importantly, they were not helping managers properly understand or control the real risks in their workplace.
What stood out was how quickly the managers spotted the issue once they understood what a good risk assessment should look like.
This happened on day one of a three day IOSH Managing Safely course. That is exactly why we believe the course is so valuable when it is delivered properly.
IOSH Managing Safely is not just about getting managers through a qualification. It is about helping them understand health and safety in a practical way, so they can go back into the workplace and make better decisions.
A good risk assessment should not be a generic document that gets filed away and forgotten about. It should be a useful tool that helps managers identify hazards, understand who could be harmed, and put sensible controls in place.
For this company, the training immediately created value for them. Their managers and directors were able to look at their existing arrangements with fresh eyes and recognise that improvement was needed. That is a real benefit of IOSH Managing Safely. It gives managers the confidence to ask better questions, challenge poor paperwork, and take ownership of health and safety in their own workplace.
If your managers rely on risk assessments but are not confident in how to check them, review them, or use them properly, IOSH Managing Safely can make a real difference.
At Jewel Safety, we deliver IOSH Managing Safely training in Hull and across East Yorkshire, with a practical focus on what managers actually need to know.
The aim is simple: managers leave the course with knowledge they can implement right away.
