Does IOSH Managing Safely Expire? How Long Is Your Certificate Valid?

IOSH-course-does-it-expire

If you have completed IOSH Managing Safely, you may be wondering whether the certificate has an expiry date. It is a particularly common question when employers review training records or promote someone into a new management role.

Does an IOSH Managing Safely certificate expire?

The IOSH Managing Safely certificate does not have a fixed expiry date. Completing the course is not the same as having a qualification that must be formally renewed every few years. But an old certificate on its own does not prove that someone’s knowledge is still sufficient for their current responsibilities.

How often should managers refresh their knowledge?

IOSH offers a Managing Safely Refresher course for people who previously completed Managing Safely. Employers should decide when refresher learning is needed by looking at changes in the workplace, individual responsibilities, incident findings and how confidently managers apply what they learnt.

Does UK law require the IOSH certificate to be renewed?

UK law does not generally require a manager to renew a particular IOSH Managing Safely certificate. It does require employers to provide appropriate health and safety information, instruction, training and supervision. A manager’s training needs therefore depend on the role and risks, not simply the age of the certificate.

Five signs further training could be useful

  • The manager has moved into a new role or taken responsibility for more people.
  • New equipment, materials or working methods have changed the risks.
  • Near misses or investigations suggest knowledge gaps.
  • Risk assessments and control measures are not being used effectively.
  • A manager struggles to explain their health and safety responsibilities.

What if someone has never completed Managing Safely?

The full course introduces risk assessment, controlling hazards, legal and workplace responsibilities, incident investigation and measuring performance. It is designed to help managers make sound decisions rather than simply memorise regulations.
